Front Page News…!

IT ISN’T EVERY DAY YOU GET TO MAKE HEADLINE NEWS.

In the wake of the Notre Dame fire and other tragic news, it is very refreshing to know that people doing good deeds can also get some space in the media, albeit if it is only at a local level.

I can only imagine how excited these two, young teenage girls must be feeling to see themselves on the front page of their local newspaper! Rightly deserved for what they are attempting to do with my little book. Trying to raise 10,000 Euros for an under-funded charity in Dublin (ICHH) that is actively helping the homeless is a mammoth undertaking. In a time when far too many teenagers seem only interested in social media gossip, knife crime, gangs, and other antisocial behaviours, it is so inspiring to know there are young adults out there that have a social conscience and wish to make a positive impact on their environment. Well done girls, recognition well deserved!

Notre Dame

Although the fire in Paris has shocked the world, it saddens me to see that so much money can be raised so quickly for a BUILDING. As historic and beautiful as it may be, there are still millions of PEOPLE at home and around the world that are homeless and in desperate need of help. My only ‘silver lining’ is that if people can unite like this for one of our ancient monuments, just imagine what we could achieve if we all decided to follow the lead of the Dublin community and joined together to help stamp out homelessness forever?

Words From A Dying Man

The last words I heard from my father, when he didn’t know he was going to die, were, “Don’t be in such a hurry this time!” Four days later, he was dead.

None of us know when our time will come, we just know it WILL come. Who are we cheating by not thinking it could come tomorrow? Or today? Or within hours… minutes… seconds…? Who are we cheating?

Isn’t it only our selves?

If you think you’re going to live forever, it gives you more time to excuse yourself for not doing NOW what you should be doing. That ‘thing’ you’ve wanted to start, why not start it now? That dream you’ve been putting off pursuing, why not do it NOW? Those things you’ve wanted to say, or do, or write, why put it off…?

You only have NOW.

If not now, then when?

Let me tell you a cold, hard, truth, no matter what you think you believe, YOU WILL NOT LIVE FOREVER.

Can A Snail Change The World?

I HAVE A DREAM…! To many, a laughable dream. To some, an unachievable dream. To others, perhaps, a dream worth dreaming and thinking about:

World Peace.

Isn’t it time?

With all the wealth, with all the people, with all the technology, the social media, and all the resources we have, surely, wouldn’t you think we would have achieved World Peace by now?

It’s been decades since Dr. Martin Luther King jr. gave his iconic speech, Mahatma Gandhi has long since passed into the annuls of time, Nelson Mandela is no longer imprisoned on this plane, and the lyrics to John Lennon’s amazing song are mere ‘Imagine-ation’… So where are our new Peace-leaders going to come from?

I hate to use the ‘B-word’, but if we are relying on our Governments to sort out the REAL issues in the world, we’ll be waiting a really, really, really, really, no, really long time! It is, and always has been in my mind, down to us – The People – to take action and be the change we want to see in the world!

#BeTheChange has that been taken yet? What would the great Peace-Leaders of old have made of the Internet? Would they have made a bigger impact, or would they have been easier targets for trolls, lobbyists, and nay-sayers? We can only speculate… So, who is brave enough to pick up the baton of peace and start running with it now?

Enter “Charlie, The Migrating Snail”

Peace Charlie

He may not be the smartest contender, but look at who he’s up against…? More to the point, let’s look at what he is achieving with very limited resources compared to our World Leaders. He’s already on a campaign to raise 10,000 Euros to help homelessness in Dublin! That might not sound like much, but he’s only a month old and has raised over 500 Euro already! Just imagine what he could do given the chance…?

And this little charity snail isn’t stopping with homelessness, through Charlie’s Causes he’ll be making a massive impact in all sorts of other areas too!

Please check out his website and check out his story.

World Peace may be a few years off yet, but just imagine what we can achieve as we journey towards that goal…? If not now, when?

It’s An Impatient World…

I’m not sure that procrastination is the opposite of impatience, but there is a lush green meadow between the two where the sun is constantly warm and the time is always right. I’m an impatient person, and an impatient writer, I openly admit that. I guess that’s why I love blogging! It allows immediate release of that creative urge. But I only blog when the time is right. That said, I have just published two books – almost back-to-back – one after 32 years, and the other after 19 years. So what does that tell you about me?

Like many writers, I wanted to have them published as soon as I finished writing them. I thought they were ready for the world and the world was ready for them! However, I have also been told I am a writer ahead of my time. As I grew up, I was constantly being compared to writers of the past: CS Lewis, Shakespeare, Beckett… Flattering as that may have been, it didn’t curb my impatience! I wanted the world to hear me NOW!

But nobody was listening.

We live in a deafeningly silent world. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of noise, an awful lot of noise, AWFUL NOISE, but nothing is really being said. Everybody is screaming, “Listen to me! Listen to me!” but when they get the mike, what do they actually say?

“I Want It ALL And I want It NOW!”

Okay, you’ve got it. What do you want? They don’t know. It’s like lottery winners that lose it all within a few years, and all their friends, and all their happiness, and… They can’t ever go back to how it was before.

What is it you want? And what is your impatience? What do you lack now that makes you want it so badly? If you think you ‘deserve’ it, can you justify that? When you have two ears, two eyes, and only one mouth, what makes you use them disproportionately? Do you really have something to say?

I don’t write to feel good about myself. I don’t write to pass the time. I don’t write to become somebody. I write because I am a vessel. I take no credit for what I write, it just flows through me. I started ‘channeling’ when I was an early teenager. I called them my ‘writing guides’. They would talk and I would write. I’m not religious, in fact I rate religion right up there with tattoos! Graffiti your body as you wish, and graffiti your mind at your peril.

So What Does This Have To Do With Impatience?

Why the rush? If you’re writing to make money, most likely it won’t happen. If you’re writing to share the latest, greatest thing, they most likely already know. In fact, if you are doing anything that isn’t getting you in touch with who you REALLY are, you’ve missed the whole point of being alive in the first place (assuming you ARE actually alive!)

Urgency… Immediacy… Imperativeness… Really? When was the last time you actually stopped and thought about your breathing? And while you think about that, when was the last time you stopped and THOUGHT? We are all so caught up in the ‘machine’ of life we barely give a breath or thought to the world and the life around us.

You want me to notice you, but how much time do you give to noticing me? Or for that matter noticing yourself?

One day there will be an ‘app’ for that.

Dear Dad – The Letters Home

“I love to write, but I hate to promote myself!”

Can any of you relate to that? We could all probably substitute ‘write’ for whatever we are passionate about. However, promotion is what gets us noticed, and being noticed is what counts these days, right?

Dear Dad coverIn an attempt NOT to be noticed, I thought I’d slip this in very late over the weekend…

It’s a book I’ve been sat on for about 19 years – yes, I have a habit of sitting on things (chairs mostly, as I write for part of my living!) and not sharing my personal feelings – but it got read recently, and well… I got persuaded to share it, finally.

“Don’t read it if you don’t like crying! It WILL make you cry.”

I’ve been told a lot recently, that I must like making people cry. Honestly, I don’t. I write what comes from my heart and my soul. This is a very personal collection of ten letters that I’ve wanted to share for many, many years.

THERE! Now I’ve done it. Happy now?

If you want to read them, either click on the book cover (which I hope you like) or click on this link: Dear Dad – The Letters Home.

Can A Cockroach Be Lovable?

cockroach coverMany people have asked me why I personify so many strange creatures in my works. It’s a great question that I haven’t really ever thought about. The vast majority of my creative ideas just come to me, I don’t put much thought into it to be truthful.

Most recently this question came from someone that read an older book of mine, THE COCKROACH CHRONICLES, which as the name suggests is about a cockroach.

I chose a cockroach due to the subject matter of the book: discrimination and understanding – it just fit. The vast majority of people hate cockroaches, but know very little about them as a creature. I saw this as a perfect mirror to discrimination. Most people with racial bias or hatred for people of different religion, race, sexuality, etc., all comes from ignorance and lack of understanding.

For example, did you know these few facts about cockroaches?

  • They are very peaceful creatures
  • They live on our waste
  • They are one of the few creatures that can survive a nuclear war

In the same way some people are scared of spiders, wasps, dogs, etc., the vast majority have never been stung, bitten, or harmed in any way, it’s an inherited fear and a false fear.

Although the reader absolutely LOVED the story and it impacted her on a very emotional level (which was the purpose of the story!) she made a good point: it would probably be much more popular if you changed the title and the book cover graphic. I’d never thought about either of those points. It’s sold a handful of copies over the years, but nowhere near as many as I would obviously have liked.

To be honest, I’m not sure really what to do with this new observation. What do you think?

Homeless in a Small Town – Part 1

Well worth reading…

PTSD Awareness Mental Health

Trigger Warning –

Homelessness does not happen overnight.  It happens in a succession of tragedies such that a person is unable to make reasonable decisions.  It may start with someone getting sick in the family.  It can be a job crisis due to a disability.  It can be a death in the family, a car accident, divorce or domestic violence.  You find yourself in one crisis that seems to set off a chain of events that take you down the path to homelessness.  In my case, I got sidelined in a long disability battle to try and retain my job.  Needless to say without an attorney, I was not able to secure my job or my home once the disability was acknowledged.  I was forced to resign in December 2013.  I was barely able to relocate  into another home for me and my family.  I had to give up my…

New Blog: My First Goal-Setting Book

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone that has bought, read, downloaded, reviewed, used, and commented on my simple, easy-to-read book about changing your life through setting goals and taking manageable steps to achieve them.

Since I’m getting more and more interest in MY FIRST GOAL-SETTING BOOK and my motivational and self-development posts, I’ve decided to create a stand-alone site just for that book and that subject:

MY FIRST GOAL-SETTING BOOK BLOG

This will allow me to keep this blog focused on other things, musings, author interviews, upcoming books I’m working on and thinking of publishing soon, and things that are going on in my life. The other site will focus exclusively on personal development and goal-setting advice.

Thank you once again for all your help, support, and encouragement.

Life: Some Words To Live By

LIFE:

You’ve either got to to deal with it, or it will deal with you. Shit’s gonna happen, accept it. Some of it you’ll have caused, some of it you’ll have attracted, some of it will be beyond your control, learn from it. Life is your biggest teacher, if you’re willing to listen and learn. Things won’t always go your way. Find a new way. Keep moving forward. Time does. Learn from it.

There is no dress rehearsal for Life. This is it. Give it your all. Give it your best. Fill your life with as much and as many experiences as you can. Some will be good and some will be bad. That’s what keeps life exciting: you never truly know. Hopefully you’ll find balance along the way.

Keep your expectations high, but your acceptance higher. Nobody’s perfect, but they are unique. Find and love your uniqueness; those things that make you ‘you’. There is greatness within all of us. Seek it out in everyone you meet, and your own greatness will be reflected back at you. Add love to every situation, good or bad. Love is the energy of Life. Love your friends. Love your family. Love yourself. But love your enemies more, because we are all one. We are all love. We are all Life.

Live your life so you can look forward to the future, if you are lucky enough to have one. Don’t dwell on the past, it’s a ship that’s sailed and is never coming back. Regrets, like grudges, will drown you, let them go, forgive, seek  forgiveness, and swim on. Embrace the present, for that is all you ever have and will have. Unwrap it as the gift it is. This is all you have and all you are.

This is your life, live it your way, on your terms. Don’t try and live someone else’s life for them, and don’t let them tell you how to live yours. Be grateful for everything you have. Even if others have more, there are many more with less. Seek them out. Help your fellow Man. In helping and serving others you will gain much, much more than you could ever give.

If you only ever believe in one thing, believe in yourself. Respect your elders, but accept they may not know what’s truly right for you. Pursue your dreams, for that is the rainbow that will bring your happiness to life. You are never given a dream without the ability to achieve it. But know your true happiness always is within you.

Live your life with passion. Laugh as often as you can, but never at anyone else’s expense, unless it’s your own.

I hope when you look back on your life you’ll smile, feel proud, and even if nobody else noticed, at least you knew you were here.
