Book Reviews: When The Rainbow Smiled by Anthony James Donnelly

Rainbows New Cover

I hope you all had a brilliant Christmas. I hope many of you managed to take advantage of my free books over the holiday season. My best presents this year are these two early reviews that have come in for my latest publication When The Rainbow Smiled.

A big thank you to both of these reviewers, what lovely words! Thank you both for taking the time to rate and write a review.

Beautifully written and illustrated short story for all ages.

A perfect accompanyment to ‘When the Trees Held Thier Breath’. This thought provoking story seems to have the ability to speak to you on many levels when considering what is happening around the world today and the society we live in. It’s a book that you can read and read again and reflect on the message of kindness, sharing and freedom of choice and what can happen when we do none of those things. If you are wanting something a little different to share with your children then buy this book!

Five Stars

Such a beautiful book. Thoughtful, thought-provoking and wonderfully illustrated. Warmth on a page.

A beautiful book, with the charm

A beautiful book, with the charm, delight and unexpected discovery of childhood innocence. The way Anthony Donnelly has unfolded the parable, we are taken on a journey that makes not only the rainbow smile, but our hearts too. A book to read to be inspired, to be lifted and to share.

How lovely to have one of my books referred to as, ‘warmth on a page’. Here’s hoping your year ends well and the New Year begins well and continues to bring you love, success and happiness.

NEW BOOK: When The Rainbow Smiled by Anthony James Donnelly

Rainbows New Cover

Originally written back in 2000 as the sequel to my first publication, When The Trees Held Their Breath, this short, illustrated work tells the story of how colour first came to the world as a ‘smiling’ rainbow. At a much deeper level, the resounding message is one of peace, love, acceptance, and harmony.

This work is especially dear to my heart, as I thought it was lost forever. At the turn of the millennium, certain members of the UK education system were showing an interest in this work as an education tool for primary school children. Since I was living in the US at that time promoting “Trees”, I handed the project and all of my artwork over to an old Secondary School friend of mine, Richard Eyre. He had many contacts, and worked diligently with them to compile a teaching resource to accompany my short, powerful story.

Sadly, the project failed to reach fruition at the last minute, and was shelved. When you are an industry outsider, it’s very hard to break into a market that is controlled by the larger organisations! Even sadder is the fact that Richard passed away this year in a tragic motorbike accident in Thailand, where he had been living for the past seven years working on humanitarian projects.

It was at his funeral recently that I was surprised to be reunited with my text and some of my original watercolour artwork once more. Although a handful of my original art was missing, they had been replaced by the fantastic work of Mani Navasothy (an artist Richard had hired to ‘upgrage’ some of my images) which add even more depth and colour to my words.

With the advancement of online publishing and print-on-demand technology, I decided to edit and format this into a full colour publication in honour of my late friend, Richard.

Although I have no doubt that this short book alone will not bring about world peace, this is part of my continuing contribution to that effort. Perhaps some younger readers and their parents will take the themes and messages of my text and open a dialogue about how we, as a combined human race, can work towards that end. A good start would be to bring peace into our personal lives, more understanding in our daily encounters with friends and strangers, a daily focus on love rather than war… We can only hope that by a collective effort and focus on love and acceptance, our children may get the opportunity to live in a war-free world.

When The Rainbow Smiled is available in print format and Kindle via the Amazon website. I love to hear feedback from my readers, so please help spread the word by sharing, posting reviews, and leaving me comments. May this year end well for you, and may 2016 bring you closer to your dreams.

#RESEARCH HELP NEEDED: TWO-TONE ERA STORIES

two-toneHi folks!

I’m doing some research into the Two-Tone/ SKA era in Britain for a new project I’m working on. I could really do with some assistance from anyone that grew up during that period (1979 into the 80s)

Here’s what I’m after:

  1. What are your most memorable songs/ bands?
  2. Do you have any interesting stories or anecdotes about that period?
  3. Are their any historical/ news events that stick in your mind?

I was around for this era, but a little too young to actually be caught up in it all, so any little tidbits you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Please either email me directly with your responses or simply write them in the comments below.

Many, many thanks for your help!

New Recipe: Coffee with BUTTER…!??

I really like surprises, especially when it comes to good surprises and food and drink. This one came from a new friend, Rhoda, who’s a naturopath from Ireland. So, for all you coffee snobs and adventurous types…

steaming coffee…try adding a nice-sized dollop of butter to your black coffee, you’ll be rather surprised how good it tastes!

Could this be the new drink trend of 2015…?

I have to admit, being a bit of a coffee snob myself, I was a little apprehensive at first, but the butter gives the coffee a rather nice caramelized, creamy feel and taste. I shall be experimenting with the recipe for a few days… perhaps adding sugar… a little cocoa… I’ve been told some salt makes a wonderful difference…

Don’t take my word for it, give it a try yourself… Enjoy, and have a great run up to the New Year!

Proof Indie Publishing Works

Since making the switch from taking the traditional publishing route to independent publishing, I have had my reservations. Was being independently published just a ‘cop out’? Were the accolades the same? Would people still see me as a ‘real’ author…?

Although my time with a traditional publisher in the US was rather short lived, I never gave up the dream of having my other works published and find an audience. I am happy to say that yesterday gave me the answer I was looking for.

Over a decade ago, I thought I’d put my first full length novel (a concept novel, part of a trilogy) in its grave after five years of trying to find a home for it with the big publishing houses. There didn’t appear to be a way to publish it and there was no way to reach an audience. Independent publishing was still in its infancy, and the tools just weren’t there.

Yesterday proved that all wrong!

New 49q coverNever Give Up On Your Dreams!

Thankfully, with some hard work and great networking, I was able to use social media platforms like WordPress, Facebook, and (mostly) twitter to promote my free book giveaway. Obviously, I was a little apprehensive and wondered if anybody would download a copy. The feedback initially from Amazon was rather slow: after six hours I had barely made an impact, rating about #63 in one category, but people were downloading my book!

By persisting and experimenting with different posts and tweets (not too many, mind!) my novel began to get more and more downloads and crept up the rankings ladder.

The independent writer-publisher network is huge, I found out. It was an exciting and humbling experience to see online friends – ‘virtual’ strangers (lol) – retweeting my book and pitching in to help spread the word. They had nothing to gain from helping me. I wasn’t paying for any promotion. Yet, there they were, these invisible friends, all playing a vital role in launching and promoting my work!

Awesome! Thank you all.

When I awoke this morning, I almost cried, my humble little offering had made it to #1 in one category and #5 in another…!!! I thought I must still be dreaming. While I was asleep, my social media friends were hard at work, not doing much you may think, just clicking and retweeting, but as a team effort WE DID IT…!!! YOU did it 🙂

The number of free downloads amazed me – in the hundreds! In only 24 hours, and counting. Now, I don’t expect my novel to become a bestseller – it’s not that kind of novel – it’s rather hit and miss, whether the readers will enjoy it completely. Now comes the tricky bit… will people post reviews? What will the reviews be like? Can I face the music, if the response is negative?

Right now, I’m up on Cloud Nine, and the potential negative reviews will probably bounce off, I’m reeling in the awe of having my book make it to #1. If you’d like to find out what all the fuss is about, it’s still free for a while, and you can download it here: 49q? The Enigma Continues.

So, if you’re an indiepub or are planning to publish a book soon, I hope this will give you the strength to carry onward, to stay positive and publish and promote your book. It can be done! With a little help from your friends… helping them out along the way (maybe you didn’t know how important that retweet or share really was)… Together as a united team of independent publishers we can continue to bring diversity and unedited creativity to the readership, letting THEM decide what’s worthy of publication, not the (often) narrow-minded editors of big publishing houses.

Again… THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH… YOU ROCK!!!

If you have a book you’re working on or needs a little more promotion, PLEASE let me help pay back all the kindness I have received with my launch and give you a push in the right direction. Contact me in the comments section, or send me a tweet! Good luck with your writing endeavors.

Currently ranked #58… can we get it into the Top 10 together…?

“This is a great concept novel from author Anthony Donnelly. His works are among the most interesting and ground-breaking on the Kindle store. I think that Anthony is a very talented author and that we will soon start hearing of him in respected book publications.”

New Cockney Rhyming Slang: “49q?’d”

I love words. I love playing with words. I love writing words. Like Shakespeare, I also love to make up new words and sayings. That is the marvel of the English language, it’s so versatile. Cockney Rhyming Slang (being a Londoner) is especially dear to my heart.

49q cover new

“49q? The Enigma Continues” is a new-concept novel I began writing in the mid-90s as part of a trilogy, a movie, AND a heavy rock music album. Those of you that know me better than others know I work in a very high-chunk realm, and love to push the boundaries of creativity. It took me seven years to compile and almost drove me mad in the process, as it’s rather intricate and confusing. Many elements of the work are free-thought association and spiritual/ cosmic channeling – at one point I even thought I was possessed…!!!? Yeah, seriously 49q?’d.

That’s the cockney rhyming slang: 49q?’d = screwed. I’m not sure how popular the expression will become, but I’m releasing the second in the trilogy to mark ten years since the completion of the project. It’ll be free to download later this month for reviewers and ratings. If you want to know more, just email me: Anthony Donnelly Email.

It’s a confusing read in parts, deep in places, some interesting quotations to make you think, downright bizarre in many elements, but for the most part an engaging and thought-provoking read. I’m looking forward to seeing how the world finally takes to this old work…

Try not to get 49q?’d, and…

Stay tuned.
